I’ve had lots of requests from people asking me to film a first date make-up tutorial as getting your look right for such an occasion can be tricky. I think that one of the most important things to remember is that your personality should shine through no matter what, so if you usually wear a smoky eye then don’t feel like you need to do something different and replace this with a statement lip – if you don’t feel comfortable your date will be able to tell!

First date make-up should also reflect the date itself – think about what you are going to be doing, are you going for a walk in the park, a romantic dinner, or a party or club? When you take all of this into account there’s no one look for all first dates but one thing I’ve learnt from experience is that the majority of guys don’t like women to look like they’re wearing tons of make-up – that means heavy bases and garishly bright lips are out (unless that’s your signature look of course!!).

The look I decided to do for this film follows this – I’ve tried to give lots of generic tips of how you can make yourself look and feel your best, with flawless, glowing skin, full lashes (I’ve used false ones in the film as my lashes aren’t naturally full but if you’re not used to wearing or applying them then it might be best not to – again, a first date isn’t a time to feel uncomfortable) and natural, dewy lips.

In the film I talk about my Grandmother’s make-up related first date disaster story – I’d love to hear any that you might have!

I can’t guarantee that all of the make-up and skincare products I recommend will suit you. I only use products I personally think are good having tried them on myself and my clients but everyone’s skin is different and it’s possible to be allergic to anything. Wherever possible, test products out on yourself before purchasing.

I only feature products I like, or want to try. The products I use in these videos are either purchased by me or sent to me by make-up companies to use in my professional capacity as a make-up artist for fashion and celebrity photo shoots, red carpet etc. I am also sent products by many of the top magazines to judge for awards.

I do not accept payment and am not sponsored to make any of the films on this channel. Some of the links under the videos and blog posts on my site are affiliated however and as stated before, I only feature products I like, or want to try.

  1. As much as I absolutely adore and respect you and your videos, I am sometimes irked by how decidedly hetero/gender normative your advice is.

    A) Not every woman’s date will be a man. B) Not every woman’s spouse/SO is a man. C) Not everyone who wears makeup on first dates is a woman.

  2. This is probably a very odd compliment, but I just love your mole! It enhances your natural beauty in an indescribable way πŸ™‚

  3. Men are so funny! All the men in my life say they like women who "wear no makeup"- what they mean is, "wear nothing that is heavy, cakey, or an unnaturally strong colour." I can wear foundation, powder, blush, shadow, eyeline, mascara, lipstick and gloss and my husband will say how much he loves that I wear barely any makeup!

  4. What most men want is for a woman to look beautiful and flawless without having to wear makeup, however we all know that is not how it works. On first dates, I usually don’t try too hard. I don’t want my skin to look perfect or my eyes to be overdone because that is not how I usually am. I don’t want the guy to feel cheated. Of course I still try to make myself look pretty, but it looks pretty much like what I do everyday.

  5. Lisa you are pure sanity in a world of overdone, gross looking (because of bad makeup choices) product pushing self-titled makeup artists. Stay blessed.

  6. I feel that this is as much a makeup tutorial as dating advice for first dates. I would wish to have her as my cool aunt or something to give me makeovers and advice for dates^^

  7. A question unrelated to makeup, but does anybody know where Lisa’s two gold rigns are from? They are absolutely gorgeous!

  8. I wore falsies on a date with my boyfriend and when we were eating he stared at my eyes and said like there is something weird in them so I felt really embarrassed and said oh that’s my new mascara maybe… but he responded that I know, these are individual lashes. How on Earth does he know about them ? Oh wait, because of his sisters πŸ™ so I am no longer feeling like wearing them anytime soon πŸ˜…

  9. I love the look! And I’m getting that you have to get used to wearing makeup or getting used to people seeing your wearing makeup. Because if you suddenly wear makeup on the date, he’ll notice. Mhmmm.

  10. Ok ladies let me save you money and give you some advice if you have large eyes like I do. I personally cannot cut the Ardel babies bec they look stupid on me when I do that. Bec my eyes are so large I can keep them exactly as they are and they almost fit as half lashes without cutting them. Hugs!

  11. I’ve got a better technique: wear heavy mascara and red lips for the first date and then this ‘no makeup’ look plus a really tight smart casual dress for the second date, and guys’ll be like: wow you look gorgeous without makeup ;p

  12. You are hands down, the best makeup artist on the planet! 😁 I’m an aspiring mua and you’re my inspiration, teacher (through your videos and your tips), role model and my go to artist when I have questions or want to learn something new. I love that you create beautiful looks that aren’t too heavy or IG inspired. I love that you teach that makeup is meant to enhance someone’s beautiful features instead of covering a pretty face with tons of unnecessary makeup! Also, I appreciate that you used (mostly) affordable products in this video! It’s more relatable for those of us who can’t or don’t want to buy and use luxury products all of the time. πŸ™‚πŸ‘πŸ» You are a makeup genius who has tremendous creativity, while conducting yourself like the intelligent, classy and nice person that you are. The beauty world (especially here on YouTube) needs more incomparable people like you! You’re the queen! πŸ’„πŸ‘ΈπŸ»πŸ’œπŸ˜€πŸ’πŸ’•

  13. I truly require a good brush because I use make up almost everyday, and I discovered what I require here
The brush quality is so awesome and the shipping is totally free so I recommend it to you guys! I believe this brush set will make your make up ritual more fun!

  14. Most men are so easily fooled and manipulated. The vast majority of them have no clue about colour and hues. Art of colour is lost on most.
